Daikin’s Climate Commitment: Net-Zero Target Approved by SBTi

A major step toward decarbonization as Daikin’s long-term greenhouse gas reduction goals gain global recognition.

Daikin Industries, Ltd., based in Osaka, has announced that its greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets have been officially approved as a “Net-Zero Target” by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This recognition places Daikin among a select group of companies worldwide that are aligning their business strategies with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The SBTi, established in 2015 by CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature, provides companies with guidance and validation to set scientifically grounded emissions reduction targets. To date, around 2,000 companies globally—including approximately 80 in Japan—have received approval for their net-zero commitments.

Earlier this year, in February 2024, Daikin had already secured SBTi approval for its short-term targets. Now, the company has gone further, achieving recognition for its ambitious long-term plan to cut emissions to virtually zero by 2050. This goal is part of Daikin’s “Environmental Vision 2050,” a strategy that emphasizes reducing the environmental impact of its air conditioners, refrigerants, and other products while supporting global comfort and well-being.

The approval underscores Daikin’s role as a leader in environmental technology. By providing sustainable solutions worldwide, Daikin is not only reducing its own footprint but also enabling society to transition toward a decarbonized future. Looking ahead, the impact of this initiative could inspire more companies in the heating and cooling industry—and beyond—to set equally ambitious climate goals, accelerating the global push toward net-zero.
